“Emberis,” she says, her voice whisper-quiet.
“Oh, Mama. I was… scared of the dark…”
She nods and smiles at me and I feel myself smiling, too. “I see that’s no longer a problem, is it, Little Star?”
“I made them.” I look back at my lights and want them to shine brighter for her.
“They’re beautiful, Emberis.”
“Watch this.” I let the lights dance around me, watching her face as she watches my magic. I think she likes them.
“Stars, you are something,” she murmurs. I don’t know what she means. I hope she means something good, something special, something she loves.
But I don’t have time to ask her because she sends her own magic out to play with mine and I don’t hold back my laughter as our lights meet each other. She laughs, too, and I'd do anything to keep her laughing with me.
They tell you to write what you know…
They forget to tell you to write what you wish you knew.
To tame that strange beast of Grief, even when the simple act of wishing threatens the peace you’ve been building around yourself.
Because sometimes it gives you words worth writing and handing to someone else’s fragile heart.
