“Commander Varrick, please let me go.”
“No.”
I sigh.
Diplomacy has failed.
“I’m sorry,” I whisper.
I finally peel back the control I’ve been hanging on so tightly to, releasing the hold on my magic, and my power immediately detonates. I don’t have the kind of precision I need to be sure no one gets hurt, but it’s too late now to worry about that.
I cannot, will not, staunch the hemorrhage of flame that climbs up trees and across dense undergrowth. My magic dances almost gleefully around my feet. I run and run… away from all the men who seem determined to keep me. Every angry, burning thought in my head fuels my fire and propels me onward.
How dare they try to cage us.
How dare they succeed for as long as they did.
I dare them to try again now.
* Princess Emberis endorses this strategy without a single shred of regret. Frankly? As she should. **
** Meris Rosewick cannot endorse unsafe use of fire in wooded areas and encourages readers to be conscientious about the dangers of setting things on fire when you’re upset. Now the lawyers are happy. But… I can’t tell you what to do with your life.
